This morning was rainy and cold with a high of only 50 degrees, but we didn't let that stop us from touring the beautiful little village of Durnstein. This charming village is in the heart of the Wachau Valley wine region and is known for its magnificent baroque blue church tower built in the 1700s. The main street of this small town with less than 1,000 residents is lined with 16th century residences and charming cobblestone streets. King Richard the Lionhearted was imprisoned in the castle whose ruins still stand above the town.
After visiting Durnstein, we cruised several hours down the Danube River through the beautiful Wachau Valley and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Arriving in Melk, we visited the magnificent 11th century Bendictine Abbey, one of Europe's largest monasteries.
In the afternoon after touring the Abbey, a local wine producer introduced us to some of his wines at a wine tasting on board. This region is also known for its apricots, so he also has apricot preserves, schnapps, and liquor in addition to his wines.
